Best Podcast Microphones for 2021

April 30, 2021
If you are looking to start a podcast, I made a list of some of my favourite microphones I have used over the past 5 years of podcasting. There are so many great mic's to choose from, but these are the ones I keep coming back too.

Let’s talk if your are starting out or on a budget. Depending on your space you are probably going to want to get a dynamic microphone for your podcast to help avoid any outside noise getting into your recording. Condenser microphones are very sensitive, so depending on how noisy your podcast space is they might pick up way to much noise. That noise can be hard to remove down the road.

So my first recommendation is tested and true Shure SM 58. This is the vocal mic of choice for live performance and studio recording. This is an all round great sounding microphone and they are only $100.  This microphone is connected via XLR so you are going to need an interface of some kind. I really like the Focusrite 2i2 or the SSL 2.

If you are looking for something more plug and play, a nice podcast microphone at the lower end of the budget is is the Rode NT-USB. This mic has your control settings including gain and headphones which is great if you do a lot podcasting on the go.

I’ve also used a Blue Yeti which does a solid job as well. You can control gain and headphone out put easily. It also has a pattern selector so if you want to adjust it from Cardioid to bidirectional you can.

If you are in the market for something more professional one of my favourite microphones of all time is the Shure SM7b. This is my by far my favourite podcast microphone. In fact years ago when I was podcasting a lot, this was the only mic I used.  It’s built great and sounds great. They just released the MV7 which is the little brother to the SM7b. Again great sounding mic but it has a USB connection as well so you can plug directly into your computer or iPad and don’t need an audio interface.

Of course I have to talk about the Electro-Voice Re20. This is much more expensive then the other mics but well worth it.  Like the SM7b, it rejects a lot of noise behind it so if your in a noisy space you can still get by, it also has a nice frequency response for vocals so you sound very nice when recording.... I mean, all these mic’s sound nice but there’s just something about a R20 that makes me go woo.

There you have it, those are my top Podcast microphones for 2021. If you want to purchase any of these, here is a list of links you can use from my affiliate program.
