Great overhead microphone pairs on a budget

Overhead microphones are an essential part of any recording or live sound setup. They capture the sound of the entire drum kit and a solid starting point for any drum mix. When it comes to selecting the best overhead microphones, there are many factors to consider, such as frequency response, sensitivity, directionality, and build quality. In this blog, I will talk about a few of my favorite overhead microphones that are under $1000.

1. The AKG Pro Audio C214 is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone that is perfect for capturing the sound of an entire drum kit. It has a cardioid polar pattern that provides great rejection for anything off-axis which is prefect for not so ideal rooms. My stuido has low ceilings so these mics are great for cutting out room sounds i don't want. The microphone also has a high SPL handling, which makes it ideal for capturing the dynamics of a live performance. The C214 has durable metal housing and a shock mount that helps to eliminate vibrations and unwanted noise. Are these comparable to C414's? not exactly, they are their own thing. With that said, a great buy that you won't regret as a overhead mic.

2.The Sennheiser e614 is a compact and versatile microphone that is perfect for overhead use. It has a supercardioid polar pattern that provides excellent off-axis rejection and a frequency response that is tailored to capture the nuances of a drum kit. The microphone also has a high SPL handling, making it ideal for capturing the dynamics of a live performance. The e614 is wel built and incredably robust. These are great for setting up in tight studio spaces, Especially if you like to record in smaller drum rooms.

3. The Rode NT5 is a small-diaphragm condenser microphone is a classic overhead microphone that can capture the full frequency range of the drum kit. I have used a pair of NT5's for almost 20 years now and have always been happy with the overhead results. These microphones sound amazing and for the price will give you the best bang for your buck.

In conclusion, selecting the best overhead microphones under $1000 for the pair depends on personal preferences, the environment you will use them, and the specific sound you want to capture. The above-listed models offer excellent performance and value for money, and they are trusted by many professional musicians, engineers, and producers. When shopping for overhead microphones, it's important to consider their frequency response, sensitivity, directionality, and build quality, and try them out before making a final decision.
